Major-Gen Chanakira defended Zimbabwe’s interests – Gen P. V. Sibanda

The Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda says national hero, the late Major General Godfrey Chanakira, will be remembered for his immense contribution to the liberation sruggle, standing for justice and defending Zimbabwe’s interests.

He was addressing mourners at the funeral parade held for Major General (Retired) Godfrey Chanakira who died last week after a long battle with a heart ailment.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, as we pay our last respects to the late Chanakira, we must not forget the sacrifices that he and other heroes and heroines made for us to be free today. It remains a challenge to us all to defend the values that they stood and fought for.

“We must always remember that to be who we are today, it is because somebody shed their sweat or blood as the Late Chanakira and many others did. Let us never lose sight of this important fact no matter how comfortable we get,” said General Sibanda.

“The late Major General Godfrey Chanakira, is Survived by his wife Faina and 3 Children. As we bid you fare well, Godfrey, we will remember you for your immense contribution to the liberation struggle. We will always remember you as a warm, likeable, fatherly figure, humble, patriotic and a selfless team player and indeed a true revolutionary cadre,” he added.

Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General David Sigauke and Air Vice Marshall Biltim Chingono of the AirForce of Zimbabwe also joined General Sibanda in laying of the wreath during the parade.
