A gang of machete-wielding miners arrested at Jumbo Mine in Bindura on Wednesday has appeared in court facing several charges including contravening the Public Order and Security Act(POSA).
The 14 member gang of illegal miners appeared before a Bindura Magistrate facing charges of criminal trespass as defined by the Criminal Law (Codification) and Reform Act and contravening POSA.
The 14 are also facing charges of possessing explosives without a permit as set out in the Explosives act.
It is the state’s case that on the 8th of January this year, the accused were intercepted as they emerged from a mine shaft carrying blast cartridges and machetes in sacks.
It is further alleged that they failed to produce a license authorizing them to possess blast cartridges and lawful reasons to carry machetes, leading to their arrest.
Magistrate Tinashe Ndokera remanded the accused in custody to 13th of January.
