Local production of mining tools critical for growth of mining sector

THE local production of mining equipment has been identified as key towards attaining the 12 billion United States dollar mining economy by 2023.

In an interview on the sidelines of the Mining Equipment Suppliers’ Symposium in Bulawayo this Friday, Zimbabwe Miners Federation Spokesman, Mr Dosman Mangisi said the availability of mining equipment will help improve the capacity utilisation of local companies and eliminate imports.

The availability of mining tools at all times is critical to the growth of the sector and what we are saying is that the local companies must provide the tools and in order for this to happen there is need for intervention by the government on capacitating these companies so that we attain a 12 billion mining economy by 2030 as stated by the president, he said.

Chairperson of Mining Equipment Supplies, Mr Edward Muchengeti assured the Zimbabwe Miners Federation of their commitment to import substitution, value addition and collaborations for the benefit of the nation.

We are dedicated to supplying the mining sector with all its needs, so that commitment calls on us as suppliers to produce quality and aim at import substitution and collaborations so that the supply chain is properly structured for the benefit of the industry.

Small scale mining, which is dominated by gold and chrome, is in the process of transforming its operations through mechanisation with the gold sector having been greatly supported by Fidelity Printers and Refineries in its tooling process.

However, some companies have failed to honour their obligations of delivering equipment to miners after being paid by Fidelity Printers and Refineries.
