Zim set to host international golf tourney

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

ZIMBABWE continues to strategically position itself as a sports destination of choice, with the country hosting the 15th International Military Sports Council (CISM) golf tournament.

The four-day tournament which is being held on African soil for the third time after Namibia and South Africa, has drawn over 100 golfers from 14 countries.

Organisers of the tournament, who spoke on the sidelines of the official opening of the golf tournament this Monday, are alive to the benefits of the tournament.

“It will be great, we will have videos and stories from this event, they go back to our host nations and they will be sent around to our media locations and they will see that we are here in Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and how beautiful it is. Hopefully, it does spur people from around the world to visit Victoria Falls. It is a beautiful local and I don’t see a reason why someone cannot come and visit Victoria Falls,” said Royal Canadian Air Force and President of CISM Golf, Major Cameron Lowdon.

CISM Secretary General from Italy, Navy Captain Roberto Recchia said, “Zimbabwe here in Victoria Falls is an amazing location. I believe that the players, the coach, the team captain that will be here, will be your ambassadors abroad when they go back home, they will share these experiences. I’m almost sure of that and convinced that they will be back to spend their vacation in Zimbabwe.”

“We view this tournament as sports tourism, we made a very close calculation to make sure that we bring this tournament to Victoria Falls so that the international community, our colleagues in the military will come and play with us golf here at this place. When they go back to their countries, they will tell their friends about the beauty of this place, of this resort. This enables thousands and thousands of people to come to our country,” said the Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee of Tournament and CISM board member, Vice Marshal Simon Nyowani.

Participating countries include Canada, Germany, South Africa, Kenya, France, Namibia, Denmark, Ireland, Botswana, Spain, Zambia, Kazakhstan, Tanzania and hosts Zimbabwe.

The tournament is being held in the country’s tourism capital at a time when Zimbabwe is targeting a US$5 billion tourism industry by 2025.
