ZANU PF pledges water security for irrigation projects

Story by Yolanda Moyo

AMID growing concern over the impact of climate change on Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, the ruling ZANU PF party has reaffirmed its commitment towards ensuring household food security through sustainable irrigation projects.

In an interview with the ZBC News in the Nyamandlovu area of Matabeleland North Province this Sunday, the ruling party’s Secretary General, Dr Obert Mpofu said the ZANU PF-led government will empower communities, improve livelihoods and safeguard food security through the provision of water.

“Our focus is on empowering our people through sustainable agriculture. The provision of reliable water sources is a top priority for ZANU PF, especially in drought-prone regions like Matabeleland. This will guarantee food security at the household level and contribute to national food self-sufficiency. We want to revive initiatives such as Umguza community ownership trust to ensure that boreholes are drilled for communities.”

Cde Mpofu highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the completion of the Gwayi-Shangani Lake project, expected to provide water for thousands of hectares of land and the Ziminya Dam in Nkayi as crucial developments for the region.

Under the Second Republic, more than 35 000 solar-powered boreholes are expected to be sunk in each village with some being installed in urban areas where opposition-led local authorities have failed to provide water.
