Youths unite against drug abuse through sport

Story Memory Chamisa

YOUTHS in Mbare are devising new ways of tackling drug abuse through sport as they aim to combat the vice which is tearing through the country’s social fabric.

The youths this Saturday came out to speak and interact against the scourge of drug and substance abuse in one of the hardest-hit areas of the city.

Through the Sport Against Drugs, an initiative set by the House of Arts Association, Hounds Network in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Art and Recreation, youths said sport was a means of escape as it kept them busy and away from indulgence.

Organisers of the sports initiative, Casper Chigama and Freddy Kachakwara outlined the importance of such initiatives in educating youths against drug and substance abuse.

“Sports Against Drugs is an initiative that was set by the House of Arts Association under the project Key to the City as a response to the rampant drug and substance abuse among young people, particularly those living in marginalised communities around Harare. The idea of using sports and arts was deliberate as it is a great tool to mobilise young people and keep them occupied in the same vein it serves as a creative, fun platform to unpack key information and engage young people on issues that are pertinent to their welfare.

“Lastly, sport not only keeps them away from drugs and substance abuse, but also goes on to be a form of rehabilitation for those recovering from drugs and substance abuse,” he said.

Various sporting disciplines were showcased, including netball, basketball and football among others.
