Innovation identified as vital in the public sector

Story by Peter Chivhima

INNOVATION has been identified as vital in the public sector as the nation journeys towards achieving a national vision of an upper-middle-income society by 2030.

Public Service Commission officials from across the country converged in Harare this Thursday for the inaugural honours and awards night with the key takeaways being the need for the public sector to be innovative.

“I therefore urge these trailblazers to infuse this exceptional quality into others as you work to systematise innovation across the entire secretariat of the PSC and beyond. When an organisation or even individuals embark on an innovation journey, organisational antibodies begin to deploy to mitigate the perceived threat.

“I have dwelt on innovation because I want us all to realise that we need to nurture thinking skills that transform ideas into tangible solutions and work processes,” said Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable July Moyo.

Honourable Moyo also spoke on the need for unity of purpose in the fight against drug and substance abuse which is threatening the national social fabric.

“It would be irresponsible of me to leave the podium without sounding the alarm on the severity of the drug and substance abuse menace that threatens our society. I would like everyone in this audience to pledge to fight to detect, ameliorate and eradicate this malady in our places of influence lest this horrible vice robs us of all our aspirations and dreams.”

The second republic is prioritising Research and Innovation, and the setting up of innovation hubs at every tertiary institution is proving to be a game changer with offshoots of these facilities helping in turning around the country’s fortunes.
