Gutu community benefits from government agriculture 8.0 initiative

Story by Mercy Bofu

VILLAGERS in Gutu have applauded the government for spearheading agricultural initiatives that are empowering communities and ensuring food security, beginning at the household level.

The Second Republic continues to transform rural lives through implementing the Agriculture 8.0 Model, with villagers in Gutu being the latest to benefit after the launch of various agriculture initiatives in their area.

A poultry project was launched this Saturday in Gutu East, with villagers receiving chickens and goats, while several boreholes have been sunk for community gardens and provision of clean water.

“Today is a big day for us as villagers. We received chickens for poultry projects, goats under the Presidential Goat Scheme and several boreholes were sunk to ensure we start community gardens,” said one of the villagers.

Another added, “This project is so empowering, imagine now we are going to start community gardens and we will be able to sell our produce.”

The government, through its Rural Industrialisation Programme, is registering community gardens as companies to ensure improved income for rural livelihoods.

“We are now registering community gardens such that they operate as companies. The programme was launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Zaka and the whole idea is to ensure we commercialise our agriculture initiatives,” said the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka.

200 hectares are earmarked for irrigation from Rute River, in a project expected to change the face of Gutu East.

“President Emmerson Mnangagwa is saying no one and no place will be left behind and here in Gutu East, we have got Rute River which was marked for irrigation development,” Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honorable Ezra Chadzamira.

ZANU PF Gutu East candidate Cde Benjamin Ganyiwa pledged to support the development vision spearheaded by President Mnangagwa.

“My campaign is being made easier given programmes being done by our President. I’m going to ensure the community benefits and support all developmental programmes by government,” he said.

The ZANU PF-led government has been spearheading various agriculture initiatives that have seen improved livelihoods in communities, including the Pfumvudza/ Intwasa programme, horticulture projects and borehole sinking, among others.
