Govt wraps up urban livelihoods assessment

Story by Abigirl Tembo

THE government has concluded the 2024 Urban Livelihoods Assessment programme focusing on urban residents with particular emphasis on their living conditions, work situations and food consumption patterns.

The intensive data collection conducted over 15 days covered a wide range of topics across 15 000 urban households, including details on food consumption, habits, income sources, water access and disease prevalence.

Food and Nutrition Council (FNC) Director of Knowledge Management, Ms Perpetual Nyadenga noted a smooth data collection process and expressed optimism regarding the results.

“Our target to collect data from 300 households per domain was achieved and we are also pleased that this was able to be completed within the set timeframe. Report writing is scheduled to be undertaken in March and thereafter, the report will be submitted to our principals for consideration and approval.

“After that, we will embark on a dissemination drive. As FNC, we are committed to providing reliable and timely information to assist the government in the development of holistic response strategies to ensure that we leave no one and no place behind. Once we complete the ZimLAC urban livelihoods processes, we are going to commence the planning for the rural livelihoods assessment which will be undertaken in all the 60 rural districts in May.”

The government intends to use the comprehensive data, coupled with residents’ feedback, to formulate policies and interventions aimed at uplifting livelihoods.

This comprehensive data collection exercise which will be taken to rural areas in May will provide a holistic understanding of the national situation, allowing for the development of effective policies across urban and rural areas.
