Govt targets completion of 2023 road and Infrastructure projects

THE Government is targeting more roads and infrastructure development projects this year, following strides achieved in 2023.

The government is seeking to expand on its yesteryear projects to provide seamless road, rail and air transport networks, which are the cornerstone of economic development.

Speaking to the ZBC News the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Honourable Felix Mhona revealed that the government’s immediate task is to complete pending projects including the Harare-Beitbridge route.

“Our visionary leader President Mnangagwa has pushed us to use our resources, which we seized as a ministry to complete Harare Beitbridge road where we doing 470 km and we left with 110km. We are also doing detours,” he said.

Refurbishment of border posts is on the cards, while resuscitation of Air Zimbabwe remains a priority.

“We have started engagements on how to enhance the corridors of our borders with Mozambique so that we have smooth gateways, we are looking at Forbes border post and Nyamapanda where concession agreements will be signed soon,” said the Minister.

Progress is expected on the Mbudzi Interchange superstructure whose civil works are halfway complete.

“I am happy that civil works done are at around 54 percent, we are working on sections that need to be carried forward. We are confident that it will be complete by midyear the part of it will be visible, we were seized with compensation and relocation, and there are feeder roads that are being constructed,” he said.

The government has established a framework to lessen the burden on the treasury to allow for private sector contribution, while the treasury allocated ZWL$1.2 trillion to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development on the national budget.
