The late Liberation War Hero Colonel John Mhlanga, who died on Tuesday in a road traffic accident, has been buried at the Midlands Provincial Heroes’ Acre.

Colonel Mhlanga, who was Zimbabwe’s defence attaché to Botswana, died in a road traffic accident along the Bulawayo-Plumtree highway on his way to his Botswana base after the Easter holidays.

He was 59.

Friends and relatives said the nation has lost an illustrious son of the soil who dedicated his life to see a prosperous free Zimbabwe.

Colonel Mhlanga joined the liberation struggle in 1976 when he crossed to Mozambique for military training.

He was one of the survivors of the Chimoio attack of 1977 after he had specialised in anti-aircraft weapons.

At independence, he was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army as a private soldier and rose through the ranks until he reached the rank of colonel.

He is survived by his wife Thandiwe and two children.
