Liberation war stalwart, Cde Abraham Nkiwane has died. He was 93.

Cde Nkiwane was one of the few remaining former Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) high command members.

The Nkiwane family confirmed that the decorated pioneer of the struggle died at a local hospital in Bulawayo this Monday after battling prostate cancer.

“My father had been ill battling prostate cancer for the past five months. His condition kept on deteriorating until last night where we got bad news that he is no more,” his son Kennedy said.

Zanu PF politburo member Cde Tshinga Dube comforted the Nkiwane family saying the nation has lost one of the revolutionary giants who laid the foundation for Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle in Zambia.

“He is a pioneer of the struggle. He is the one who organised and received us when we went for training. In the ZIPRA High Command he was in charge of personnel, while Dabengwa headed intelligence, Mphoko being chief of logistics and myself being in charge of communications.”

The late Cde Nkiwane is survived by his wife Shirley Ntombizodwa Nkiwane, three children and grandchildren.

Mourners are gathered at the late Nkiwane’s Joyful Farm in Umguza.
