TWO liberation heroes – Cdes Baster Mafio and Pindai Mtunzi – who died early this month, have been buried at Masvingo Provincial Heroes Acre.

It was a somber atmosphere at provincial shrine as family, friends, government officials and ZANU PF party members gathered to bid farewell to the two liberation heroes.

The two were described as loyal and selfless cadres who were determined to protect the country’s sovereignty.

“As a province and the nation at large, we have lost our pillars of inspiration in our wavering fight for independence, national identification, economic freedom and empowerment. The two sacrificed to the ideas, objectives and ethics of the liberation struggle,” Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Hon Ezra Chadzamira said.

Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa, the ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Chairman thanked the province for working together with the two heroes and urged more unity.

Family representatives also thanked government for the support and honour bestowed upon the two heroes.

Born in 1954 in Zaka, Cde Mafio joined the liberation struggle in 1976 and trained at Mgagao Camp before joining the Front in fighting white minority rule.

Cde Pindai Mtunzi was born in 1956 in Chipinge and joined the liberation struggle in 1976, received training in Tanzania and operated in Gaza province.

After independence, the two joined the Zimbabwe National Army and were active in politics in Masvingo province after their retirement.
