PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga as the new Minister of Health and Child Care.
The appointment is with immediate effect.
“In making this decision, …the President has noted the urgent need to stabilise, restructure and reform the national health delivery system to better cope with challenges of the global Covid-19 pandemic, and in the process, ensuring a quick turn-around in national healthcare,” Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said in a statement Tuesday evening.
The appointment of Vice President Chiwenga as Health Minister follows the dismissal of Dr Obadiah Moyo last month for misconduct and comes at a time the country is grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic, amid a spike in local transmissions.
This Monday, President Mnangagwa also appointed a new Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza, who took over from Dr Agnes Mahomva, who is now the Chief Coordinator for Covid-19 response.
As of this Tuesday, Covid-19 confirmed cases had reached 4 221 after an additional 146 people tested positive to the virus. All the recorded cases are local ones who have been isolated. One death was recorded bringing the total number of deaths to 81 since the first case of the virus was recorded in the country in March this year. Recovered cases are currently at 1 238.
