La Liga equipment mystery continues to rock local football

BY ZBC Reporter
A DARK cloud continues to hover over Zimbabwean football, amid revelations of missing equipment which was donated by the Spanish football governing body, La Liga to the Zimbabwe Football Association when it was still being led by Philip Chiyangwa.

It appeared all rosy when top La Liga official, Antonino Barradas visited the country to seal a partnership deal with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) back in February 2018.

Almost 2 years after the agreement, questions have arisen over the use of equipment donated by La Liga which was meant for developmental purposes.

La Liga reportedly donated over one thousand (1000) balls meant for schools and clubs but reports suggest none of the equipment reached its intended destination.

It is feared lack of accountability could result in the collapse of an agreement which could have seen Zimbabwe benefit through a training of the trainer project led by La Liga certified and qualified trainers.

Training camps, football tours for Zimbabwean teams in Spain and exposure of talented local footballers are various areas in which Zimbabwe could miss out on if the matter of donated equipment is not fully explained.

Former ZIFA President Phillip Chiyangwa under whose leadership the agreement was sealed said he could not comment on a matter which is being handled by the police.

To add to the La Liga debacle, the former ZIFA leadership also stands accused of misappropriating equipment sourced from FIFA.

In a communication addressed to Phillip Chiyangwa and Omega Sibanda on the 3rd of January, ZIFA requested the former ZIFA President and Vice President to facilitate the handover of equipment donated by FIFA to ZIFA which was never availed to the current leadership.

Efforts to get in touch with ZIFA’s leadership to establish whether Chiyangwa and Sibanda had handed over the equipment to the local football governing body proved fruitless with, Acting ZIFA Vice President Philemon Machana referring this ZBC News crew to Communications Officer, Xolisani Gwesela who was not reachable and is said to be out of the country.

Efforts to get in touch with ZIFA CEO, Joseph Mamutse also failed to yield any results as his phone went unanswered.
