KWEKWE: Two dead, 20 feared dead in mine collapse

By ZBC Reporter
TWO miners have been confirmed dead while about 20 others are still trapped underground following the collapse of a shaft at Globe and Phoenix Mine Wednesday night.
Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit Chairperson, Fortune Mupungu said a rescue team which went underground to assess the situation found two bodies but official rescue operations were yet to start.
It also emerged that, the trapped miners were conducting illegal mining activities after official operations were stopped in 2007 at a directive from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA).

Some fellow illegal miners were still trooping out of the mine’s separate shafts as news of the mishap continued to filter. Self-imposed security personnel manning the area were threatening anyone who dared take pictures of the mine.
“We don’t want pictures here those who have came out of the shafts please go to your homes, we have stopped activities here can everyone leave the place” said one rogue security personnel at the mine.
Chief Government Mining Engineer, Michael Munodawafa said mining inspectors were expected at the scene soon.
