UPDATED: Major General (Retd) Sydney Bhebhe dies

THE Zimbabwe National Army has announced the death of Major General (Retd) Sydney Bhebhe in Harare. He was 61.
In a statement, Zimbabwe National Army Commander, Lieutenent General David Sigauke said he regrets to announce the passing on of Major Gen (Retd) Bhebhe who passed on at the Avenues Clinic on Monday evening.
His death comes hard on the heels of the death of Major Generals (Retd)Godfrey Chanakira who died on the 26th of May, followed by Major General (Retd) Sikhulile Simposon Nyathi who died on the 5th of June 2022.
Major Gen. was born on the 30th of September 1960 at Masase Mission Hospital in Mberengwa district in the Midlands Province.
He did his primary education at different schools including Masase Primary school, Chiremba primary school in Epworth, Mnene boarding school and Danamombe primary school.
“His parents were both teachers hence he kept on transferring to a number of schools following his parent’s transfers. Major General (Retd) Bhebhe did his secondary education at Masase secondary school also in Mberengwa form 1974 to 1977,” read part of the statement.
Major General (Retd) Bhebhe joined the liberation struggle under the Zimbabwe African People’s Revolutinary Army, ZIPRA, after crossing the border into Zambia Via Botswana in April 1977.
“The late freedom fighter received military training at Boma Training Camp in Angola in 1977. After completing basic training in March 1978, he was selected to be an instructor and underwent further military training in Semi-Conventional and Conventional Warfare at the same camp,” said Lt Gen Sigauke.
At independence, the late Major General Bhebhe was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army where he rose through the ranks to Major General in 2021, the rank he retired with from the ZNA that same year.
Mourners are gathered at house number 15 Cranborne West Married Quarters, Hatfield in Harare. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. Major General (Retd) Bhebhe is survived by his wife Sarah Bhebhe and three children.
