Local companies continue to complement government efforts to cushion Zimbabweans from the effects of the COVID-19 induced lockdown, with one handing over 100 tonnes of mealie meal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for distribution to the vulnerable.
It was a brief ceremony just before the commencement of this week’s cabinet meeting in Harare –with the spirit of teamwork and Ubuntu on display.
Better Brands Jewellers becomes the latest firm to partner government in the fight against COVID-19, following a handover of 100 tonnes of mealie-meal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for distribution to the vulnerable members of society.
The firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Scott Sakupwanya spoke on what drove them to mobilise the staple food for fellow Zimbabweans.
“We have seen it fit that during this difficult time we also help people in need. The 10 000 by 10 kilogrammes bags of mealie will be distributed by the President to those in need, where there is a need.”
President Mnangagwa, who was in the company of his two deputies; Retired General Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Cde Kembo Mohadi, challenged the youth to be responsible citizens.
“We are thankful. This is a good gesture. If we have many young people with such a good heart, then we are assured the nation will move on. This will reduce the burden.”
Also present at the handover were the Chairperson of the COVID-19 National Taskforce, Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, Local Government and Public Works Minister Cde July Moyo and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Cde Kazembe Kazembe.
