UPDATED…Infrastructure development key for economic growth : President

The President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa says the completion of part of the Marongora-Hellsgate road in Mashonaland West Province is in line with the SADC Masterplan -Vision 2027 which envisages a well maintained and operated infrastructure coupled with seamless transport services.

The project which is a result of support to the tune of USD21 million from the Government of Japan was supposed to have been completed in December 2020 but stalled due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during the commissioning the President said key national policies can be fulfilled through infrastructure development.

Infrastructure development is a key enabler of sound economic growth and development. Hence, the availability of appropriate and adequate infrastructure is a necessary condition for the realisation of targets outlined in the National Development Strategy-1 and Vision 2030, he said

 The President also highlighted that the maintenance of roads In line with Agenda 2063.

In the same vein, the rehabilitation, construction and maintenance of roads that are able to connect regional trade corridors further help to precipitate the realisation of trade projections through increased capacity and performance of the transport and logistics sector. This in turn serves both inter-regional and continent trade in line with Agenda 2063, of a more integrated, united and prosperous government, he explained.

The Marongora-Hellsgate section had become risky and prone to road traffic accidents, resulting in unnecessary loss of lives hence the rehabilitation is expected to improve the safety of the motoring public.

The project also complements government efforts towards rehabilitation and upgrading of roads across the country including ongoing works under the Second Phase of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme which was launched on 15 April 2021.
