Junior tennis players scoop gold medals

IT was a clean sweep for Zimbabwe in the final edition of the Tennis Foundation Open in Accra, Ghana, after winning gold in the singles and doubles this Saturday.
Tennis prodigy Rufaro Magarira won her second International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament this year after she beat May Baranes of Israel 4-6 6-3 6-0.
The 17 year old, who won the Kenya Open in June and had made it to two finals without getting gold, made sure this Saturday when she beat the Israeli who is coincidentally her doubles partner.
Magarira now returns to her training base in France as she awaits to participate in the Zimbabwe leg of the ITF circuit.
In the doubles, 14 year old Sasha Chimedza and 15 year old Tadiwanashe Mauchi capped a fine tournament for Zimbabwe after beating the Austrian doubles team 3-6 7-5 10-8 to bag the gold medal.
Meanwhile, the Davis Cup team is yet to get confirmation on their opponents after China pulled out of the group two matches.
“We are hard at work and it’s good that our team of Benjamin lock, Gwinyai Tongoona is back to full fitness and the young Lock (Courtney) has also been doing well so we are going to be ready to fight for a place in group one,” said Billy Magarira Tennis Zimbabwe President.
International Tennis Federation is expected to announce the new opponents soon.
