Jailed ex-minister back in court on fresh graft charges

GWERU: Imprisoned former Midlands Minister of State Jason Machaya was back in court this Tuesday on fresh allegations of criminal abuse of office regarding land allocation.

Machaya, who was convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison on allegations of criminal abuse of office and unlawful allocation of state land to land developers, is facing fresh corruption charges.

The former minister is charged together with ex-Midlands Provincial Coordinator Cecelia Chitiyo and five other government officials.

Prosecutor Mirirai Shumba told the court that during the period Machaya was Midlands Minister of State he allegedly connived with six other government officials to unlawfully allocate state land in Gweru and Gokwe.

The other five accomplices are Matilda Manhambo, Sherpard Marweyi, Sifelani Moyo, Ethel Mlalazi and Everest Nyamadzawo.

Machaya will be back in court on the 16th of next month for continuation of trial.
