Media playing huge role in promoting Russia-Zim investment relations  – Minister Mutsvangwa

Story by Justin Mahlahla in St Petersburg, Russia

THE Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa says the media has a huge role to play in promoting economic ties between Russia and Zimbabwe.

She was speaking during a roundtable discussion attended by Zimbabwean government officials and Russian businesspeople in St Petersburg this Wednesday.

The business engagement was held as a precursor to the Second Russia-Africa  Economic and Humanitarian Forum which is being attended by several African leaders including President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“Our President, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared that Zimbabwe is Open for Business. We are therefore looking to create synergies and partnerships in the media. We can not do business together if we don’t know each other well. This is where the media comes in and we are grateful for the partnerships we have with Russian media organisations such as Russia Today, SPUTNIK and others,” she said.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Dr Frederick Shava, who was chairing the business engagement, highlighted the vast opportunities that exist in Zimbabwe, from energy and power generation, and infrastructure development to farming and tourism.

“Over the last two years, we have been pushing for a win-win relationship with Zimbabwe. We have engaged the Russian Federation, and corporations interested in investing in Zimbabwe.

“More than 50 companies have expressed their willingness to invest in Zimbabwe. We are convinced that you are saying the right things and the main purpose of today’s meeting is to come up with a roadmap.

“This is a great honour to address the Russian business community, I hope this will go a long way in deepening the economic relations between the two countries. This is a platform for sharing information on the vast business opportunities that exist in Zimbabwe which I hope the companies here will consider investing in,” said Dr Shava.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Sekai Nzenza who is also part of the Zimbabwean delegation weighed in saying the second republic under the leadership of President Mnangagwa has worked hard to remove barriers to international trade and create an enabling environment anchored on the ease of doing business.

Zimbabwe trade promotion body- Zimtrade CEO Mr Allan Majuru invited Russian businesspeople to invest in Zimbabwe’s horticulture sector, whose products are finding a ready market in Europe.

Among those who also made presentations during the engagement was the chief executive officer of Geo Pomona Waste Management, Mr Delish Nguwaya who extended an invitation to Russian investors to explore business opportunities in Zimbabwe’s waste management sub-sector.

“In my capacity as the CEO and Executive Chairman of GeoPomona Waste Management Company, I would like to call upon investors to establish partnerships with our fast-growth
enterprise.

“GeoPomona Private Limited is the innovative hub of Pomona Waste Management. We are spearheading this multi-million-dollar waste management project through a policy directive of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. This effectively demonstrates that under President Mnangagwa, the Government-Private Sector divide has been bridged.
Clearly, this is evidence that our Government is open to creating avenues of collaboration for investment growth,” he said.

Captains of industry and leaders of various government departments are in St Petersburg to establish and strengthen socio-economic synergies with their Russian counterparts during the Second Russia-Africa, summit which runs from the 27th to the 28th of July under the theme, ‘For peace, security and development’.
