Industry ministry to prioritise value addition

THE Ministry of Industry and Commerce says there are opportunities for value addition in the cotton and sugar cane industry that can be used to reduce import expenditure and promote the local manufacturing industry.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr. Sekai Nzenza says with the sound budget support received from the treasury there are vast opportunities that can be unlocked in the local manufacturing industry.

“We want to embrace technology, our machines are obsolete and we can’t be using them. We received a reasonable budget and we are looking forward to seeing increased capacity. I am going to work with the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure value addition,” said Minister Nzenza.

She said the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency Act (ZIDA) is a legislative tool to further promote investment and increase capacity through enhanced technology.

“ We have sugar cane but we are importing glucose, we can manufacture our own glucose in Zimbabwe,” she added.

The issue of import substitution has been identified as the only solution to revive the local industry and with budgetary support, there are high chances of success.
