In 2021, Government partnership with the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) rehabilitated the 76-hectare Mayorca Irrigation Scheme, under the Smallholder Irrigation Revitalisation Programme (SIRP).

Mayorca Irrigation Scheme has since transformed subsistence farming at household level into commercial farming as part of rural development and industrialisation in line with the country’s vision of creating an upper middle-income economy by 2030.

76 families are benefiting from this programme, while producing sugar beans, wheat, maize and recently, winter wheat farming.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently said the country expected a better wheat harvest this year, which will reduce imports.

In Zhombe, irrigation is the only sustainable way of achieving food security, because the place is generally dry and experiences seasonal and mid-season droughts such that dry land farming is almost impossible.
