THE women’s hockey junior world cup, which was slated for South Africa next month, has been cancelled after a new Covid-19 variant was detected.
After all the effort in training since 2019 in preparation for the Hockey Women’s Junior world cup, the Zimbabwe national under 21 Women’s hockey team’s hopes were dashed after the International Hockey Federation called off the South African tourney.
This comes after a new COVID-19 variant was detected in South Africa.
Hockey Association of Zimbabwe President Grant Campbell hopes the tourney will go ahead next year as they wait for the announcement of revised dates.
“We are waiting for further updates from FIH and Africa Hockey as to when and maybe accommodate the game and the South African hockey association is doing a lot of work on their side to see what they can do, so we keep our fingers crossed that earlier in the new year something comes together so that the Junior world cup can carry on as planned,” said Grant Campbell, Zimbabwe hockey president.
Sixteen nations were heading to Potchefstroom ahead of the tournament which was scheduled to kick off on the fifth of next month.
However, the Zimbabwe national Under-21 Women’s hockey team will continue with training as they are still preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations slated for Ghana next year.
