Hockey flames miss out on bronze

THE National women’s hockey team, the Flames missed out on securing a bronze medal after going down 3-1 to Kenya as the Hockey Africa Cup of Nations that concluded in Ghana this Sunday.

After failing to go beyond the group stages of the prestigious tournament since winning a bronze medal in 1998, the Zimbabwean team was bidding to repeat the feat but came out stuck against Kenya.

The match ended nil-all in regulation time before the East Africans nicked it 3-1 on penalties to end the tournament with a bronze at the expense of the Flames.

The team had a muzzy run at the tournament led by coach Patricia Davies who was a part of the Golden Girls team that grabbed a gold medal for Zimbabwe at the Russia Olympics in 1980.

The Flames won the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 1991, and that remains the only time another country except South Africa won the competition.

Their other medal in the competition came back in 1998 when they clinched the bronze medal.
