Villagers from Zvishavane’s Runde area continue to lose cattle to a hippopotamus that attacks any animal that comes to drink water at Siwanika pool.
The scramble for water and a grazing area surrounding Runde’s Siwanika pool has on several occasions turned out to be fatal for livestock in Zvishavane as a male hippopotamus is not leaving anything to chance.
The villagers said previous attempts to have the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority intervene have hit a brick wall, and have now lost ten cattle in two months.
Zimparks spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo says they had not received the report but they hope to assist the villagers.
“As Zimparks we are receiving the report from you but we promise to assist the villagers in the shortest possible time.”
The villagers have now resorted to night guarding to safeguard their river bank horticultural gardens as the nocturnal animals have become a menace.
