HEAVY rains that pounded most parts of the country this Friday exposed the poor drainage systems in some areas with Chegutu being one of the towns where volumes of water were left gushing and flowing on the tarmac.
Volumes of water covered roads in Chegutu as the drainage system failed to cope following the heavy rains.
The worst affected area was the main highway, as motorists who had parked their vehicles along the road had to wait hours for the water to recede.
Residents and motorists blamed poor workmanship on the drains.
Chegutu Town Engineer, Mr. Ambrose Nyarumbu said it is a result of wrong storm drain pipe sizes installed by the company that was contracted for the rehabilitation of the Harare – Plumtree highway.
Engineer Nyarumbu said the worst affected area is under the oversight of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and any structural changes have to be done in consultation with the responsible ministry.
