Relations between NAC, media key in ending HIV & AIDS

Story by Bengani Ncube

Symbiotic relationships between the National AIDS Council (NAC) and the media are key in achieving the target goals of ending HIV and AIDs by the year 2030.

Addressing journalists at a two-day media workshop held at Chinhoyi University of Technology this Thursday, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere said journalists play a pivotal role towards the attainment of Vision 2030.

Dr Muswere cited the use of local languages as an important vessel in the articulation of national issues, giving an example of the success story of the coverage of the spread of cholera.

He said the Ministry of Health and Child Care presented a report to President Emmerson Mnangagwa wherein ten districts were declared cholera free, saying all this was attributable to an active media in raising awareness as well as working hand in glove with the medical fraternity.

Dr Muswere challenged NAC to invest in scientific research and pharmaceutical research so that the nation can become scientifically sovereign, enabling it to provide health services to its citizens in sync with President Mnangagwa’s philosophy that ‘Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo/ Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikazi Balo.’

He went on to say members of the fourth estate have a role to project a positive image of the country’s achievements such as efforts Zimbabwe has made in reducing the HIV prevalence rate and that it has managed to submit the global report to the United Nations.

The National AIDS Council is holding the media workshop to give an update on interventions to date towards the elimination of HIV and AIDs under the theme: ‘Let Communities Lead’.
