Kidzcan Cancer Village launched

Story by Tarirai Madhuyu

GOVERNMENT and development partners have joined hands to expand a Harare-based one-stop centre for the treatment and rehabilitation of children diagnosed with cancer.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care in partnership with Kidzcan this Thursday commemorated the International Childhood Day in style by unveiling new infrastructure at the Rainbow Children’s Village in Harare which caters for children diagnosed with cancer, their parents and caregivers during treatment.

Kidzcan Acting Board Chair, Reverend Gary Cross said, “We managed to come up with more than 27 twin bedrooms, enough entertainment for our patients and also able to cater for their transport. We also offer them with social cycle support.”

Early detection and treatment have been cited as key, amid revelations that 80% of child cancer patients die each year in developing countries as compared to 20% in developed countries.

Oncologist, Mrs Loyce Hlatiwayo said, “Parents with children living with cancer are encouraged to seek medical attention for their kids because cancer can be treated that is when it has been detected early. There is a myth that cancer cannot be treated but this is wrong.”

The partnership between the Ministry of Health and Child Care with Kidzcan is already transforming lives.

“It was a difficult time but I am grateful for the assistance from the government and its development partners. I would want to urge parents and guardians to monitor their kids and seek treatment early because cancer can be permanently cured,” said the mother of a cancer survivor.

Zimbabwe is working towards increasing the cancer survival rate from 20 to 60% by 2030.
