THE Gweru Provincial Hospital Centre of Excellence is ready for commissioning after the completion of construction works and furnishing, in a major milestone set to improve health services at the facility.
Completion of the US$200 thousand, Centre of Excellence comes hard on the heels of yet another milestone by the hospital after the opening of a modern intensive care unit in August 2020.
The Centre of Excellence is a One Stop Shop with consultation rooms and a built-in pharmacy where patients will get all the services under one roof, as
Speaking to ZBC News, Gweru Provincial Hospital Matron, Mrs Charity Garwe noted that the one stop shop will go a long way in alleviating stigma towards HIV and AIDS patients.
“This is a huge initiative as we work towards addressing issues of HIV and AIDS at this institution. Our patients used to get such facilities at the causality and this did not provide them with the necessary facilities needed to address such conditions. In setting up this facility we are trying to deal with issues of stigmatisation as people will get professional help in a friendly environment away from the other patients,” she said,
The Matron also highlighted that the institution’s intensive care unit is providing the best service as it is being run by well-trained personnel.
“Well, I am very pleased to highlight that everything at this institution is up to the expected standards. Our ICU is one of the best in the country as it has the requisite expertise one can ever anticipate on this planet. However we have few complicated cases where we sometimes refer our patients to either Mpilo in Bulawayo or Parirenyatwa in Harare,” she added.
With a carrying capacity of 14 patients, the multi-million dollar ICU has four patients at the moment, while the High Dependency Unit (HDU) which has a carrying capacity of 13 patients is ready to admit patients.
