Gwayi-Shangani Lake project on course

GOVERNMENT is satisfied with the progress at the ongoing Gwayi-Shangani Lake construction project.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka, who recently toured the construction site commended the progress that has been made so far.

“We are now are 69 percent. There is so much progress that has happened and also in terms of electricity evacuation, the tunnel is almost 50 percent done. We then want to assess progress which the pipeline itself,” he said.

Completion of the dam is expected to pave way for the next phase that will see the construction of a 250km water pipeline to Bulawayo.

Besides solving Bulawayo’s perennial water challenges, an agriculture green belt powered by irrigation will also be established along the pipeline.

Matebeleland North which is already riding on the successful Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme is set to benefit even more as other projects are expected to utilise water from the lake whose length will be at around 50km.
