Gwanda farmers in Intwasa land preparations

FARMERS in Matshetsheni area of Gwanda have started Intwasa/Pfumfvudza land preparation for the summer cropping season in the wake of revelations that government has already put in place modalities to provide inputs.

While climate change has had devastating effects on communal farming, those who took heed of government’s call to adopt the climate proof Pfumfvudza/Intwasa programme have a different story to tell.

Good harvests in the past two seasons have seen farmers in Matshetsheni area of Gwanda getting down to business in terms of land preparation for the summer cropping season.

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transform the sector through climate smart agriculture as alluded to by the Chief Director in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri.

“We should start land preparation now so that we transform our agriculture. Pfumfvudza is the only solution to climate change,” he said.

Government launched the Agriculture and Food Systems Transformation Strategy in 2020 to turnaround the fortunes of the agricultural sector, which was underperforming.
