Govt to address plight of health workers

GOVERNMENT says a solution is in sight to address the concerns of health workers with negotiations at an advanced stage.

Leader of Government Business in the National Assembly, Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi told the August House this Thursday that negotiations to address the plight of nurses are being finalised.

“Our aim is for negotiations between government and health workers to move swiftly. Government is currently engaged with organisations which represent Healthcare Workers, hence they were advised to continue working untill the talks are finalised. At the moment government has communicated the increment it is capable of, and only untill the talks are finished can we advise of the way forward. We will work towards improving our economy but government will never peg salaries in $US,” he said.

It also emerged that government has penalised more than 160 companies for violating the Auction System.

This comes after investigations revealed that some companies benefitting from the auction system are only accepting payment in United States dollars in violation of the terms of reference.

“Those who violated the auction were penalised. These are the companies who benefited from the auction but then go and sell in $US. We have so far penalised 163 and we have 284 who are under investigation. Up to Friday ,11 out of 28 pharmacies and retailers who benefit from the auction complied with regulations,” noted Ziyambi.

Legislators also sought answers on government efforts to enhance justice delivery through decentralising High Courts.

“We want to ensure that access to justice is accessed across the country. We have so far opened High Courts in Mashonaland West and Manicaland and we have a target of having a High Court in every province to make sure cases are dealt with in time,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development Honourable Clemence Chiduwa told the house that the country is expected to reach a stage where the official exchange rate will be the same as that of the parallel market.
