By ZBC Reporter

Government has read a riot act on perpetrators of rape and child marriages, saying the vices endanger the lives of the girl child.

This follows the death of a 14 year old girl, Memory Machaya during child birth in Bocha, Manicaland Province last week.

Child marriages continue unabated across the country and just last week, the brunt of the vice was felt by all Zimbabweans following the death of a Bocha girl, Memory Machaya while giving birth.

The incident has already received widespread condemnation on various media platforms, with Zimbabweans venting their anger at the continued exploitation of the girl child that is a not only a threat to life but also to the country’s chances of meeting Sustainable Development goals number 3 and 5 that touch on good health and well-being for all and gender equality.

This Monday, the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises read the riot act on perpetrators of girl child abuse under the guise of religion and culture.

I also want to unequivocally state that child marriage is nothing other than child sexual abuse disguised as a marriage, she said.

Minister Nyoni also assured the nation that investigations on the case of Memory are underway.

Investigations are underway to locate this particular case in Bocha including law enforcement agencies to ensure justice prevails, added Nyoni.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they will give an update on the current investigations once more details are gathered.
