Government pledges to capacitate local authorities

GOVERNMENT has pledged to avail resources to capacitate local authorities, most of which are facing challenges in the provision of services.
Addressing representatives of local authorities during a Budget Implementation and Citizen Engagement Workshop which ended in Harare on Friday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Erica Jones said the government is working tirelessly towards capacitating local authorities for them to improve on service delivery.
“We are working tirelessly as government, to make sure that we empower the local authorities for them to deliver efficiently,” said Jones
The Commonwealth Local Government Forum Project Manager, Leopold Boroma indicated that for the local authorities to contribute towards the success of the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP), there is need to empower them financially and with necessary skills.
“The workshop we had was an eye-opener as we learnt that for communities to develop, there is a need to empower them with funding and skills,” he said
President of the Zimbabwe Local Government Association, Alderman Guy Mutasa highlighted the significance of devolution in the development of rural communities.
He said, “Devolution is very important in the development of rural communities. For example, in Mutasa, we have managed to build schools and clinics due to devolution programmes.”
The workshop was attended by representatives from local authorities from all the country’s provinces.
