Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has assured community leaders in Chiredzi that government is committed to the empowerment of rural communities through agriculture projects.

The Vice President met Chiredzi community leaders this Sunday where he assured them that no displacements will take place and that those in Chilonga area, are set to benefit immensely from the earmarked Lucerne project.

“The Chilonga project is something we have thoroughly looked into and the plans presented through agriculture ministry have satisfied the government. This project is not going to affect settlements in Chilonga in other words it’s going to empower them,” he said.

Chiredzi traditional leaders thanked the government for bringing development to their area.

“We thank you for coming and we appreciate the fact that, as you promised, our people will benefit from this project. We are excited about the coming development and the fact that no one shall be displace,” said one of the chiefs of the area.

Given the abundant water resources in the province, Masvingo has the potential to feed the entire nation.

“As Masvingo province we are highly expectant of good projects as a result of our dams and we are happy that our irrigation schemes are going to be rehabilitated for the development of the province,” said Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira.

The government has identified more than 20 thousand hectares of land for irrigation development in Chiredzi.

For the Chilonga scheme, a phased approach has been taken with the first and second phase developed for the community, while the third phase will be the Lucerne project earmarked to boost the livestock sector.
