THE local Small to Medium Enterprises sector has been commended for staying afloat despite operational challenges that have come with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Minister Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Dr Sithembiso Nyoni was in Msasa Industrial area this Monday to assess the prevailing situation as the sector battles to stay afloat in the wake of Covid-19.
She was accompanied by the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Dr Kirsty Coventry and the Chairman of the Harare chamber of SMEs Mr Taurai Marembo.
It emerged that the biggest challenge is the unavailability of raw materials on the local market as highlighted by a representative of some of the companies operating in the area.
“80% of the raw materials are being imported but securing the forex is a challenge as most of our members are not yet aware of the SMEs forex auction,” he said.
After the tour, the two ministers commended the SMEs sector for its resilience while operating under difficult conditions.
“I am very impressed by the work that these SMEs are producing, the quality is top-notch, Covid-19 has not closed their minds instead it has opened up their minds. Your concerns and challenges are being shared among the industry, thank you for your resilience and for continuing to operate amidst the challenges,” they said
The companies which specialise in school, sports and corporate ware have since taken a proactive approach by diversifying into the manufacturing of personal protective clothing to meet Covid-19 induced demand.
