GOVERNMENT has availed ZW$10 million for people who have been affected by floods in Manicaland province following nonstop rains as a result of tropical storms and cyclones.
The relentless rains received in Manicaland province have exposed poor drainage systems in Mutare resulting in areas such as Dreamhouse, Dangamvura, Gimboki and Pegasus being affected, with the Cyclone Eloise expected to increase pressure on the affected areas.
Residents who spoke to ZBC News narrated their ordeal, urging authorities to attend to the issue as a matter of urgency.
“We had a serious challenge of poor drainage systems. Our food staffs were eroded by water as we rescued our children who were in the houses through the windows. We have houses that are on wetlands hence we were affected. Poor drainage system is exacerbating the flooding situation. We are appealing for assistance to be fast-tracked, especially to attend to our roads and drainage systems as well as provision of food and non-food items,” they said.
Manicaland Provincial Development coordinator, Mr Edgar Seenza revealed that government has availed ten million dollars to assist those affected by the floods.
“We have four areas affected by flooding in Mutare. We have been given food to assist the affected people. We have also been given ten million dollars to assist flood victims in the province,” he said.
The nonstop rains are a wake-up call to those who continue to construct houses on wetlands which puts their lives and others in danger.
