Gokwe-Kabuyuni by-election date set

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed August 27 as the date for the by-election in the Gokwe-Kabuyuni constituency, with the nomination court sitting on July 22.

In Statutory Instrument 123 of 2022, President Mnangagwa said the Speaker of the National Assembly has notified in writing of a vacancy in parliament following to death of the Gokwe-Kabuyuni legislator, Cde Leonard Chikomba in May.

“Now, therefore, under and by virtue of the powers invested in the President as aforesaid, I do, hereby by this my Proclamation- (a) order a new election for the constituency of Gokwe-Kabuyuni; and (b) fix Friday 22nd of July, 2022 and the Magistrates’ Court, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Street, Gweru, as the date on which and the place at which a nomination court shall sit in terms of section 46 of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], to receive the nomination of candidates for election for the constituency of Gokwe-Kabuyuni; and (c) fix Saturday, the 27th day of August, 2022, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17(c) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13],” reads the statutory Instrument.

Cde Chikomba died in a road traffic accident along the Kwekwe – Gokwe highway on his way from Gweru after attending a ZANU PF party meeting.
