George Shaya a symbol of defiant victory:President

The President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa has described late football legend George Shaya as a great player,mentor and leader both on and off the field of play.

In a condolence message to the Shaya family,the President said Shaya beat the artificial impairment of racial segregation in sport five times thus he became a symbol of defiant victory.

Cde Shaya achieved the rare feat of becoming a five-time Soccer Star of the Year in the the Rhodesia where everything was run along racial lines.For the oppressed and racially discriminated black indigenes,he thus became a symbol of defiant victory through sport,he said

The President also took the opportunity to urge youths to excel in various sporting disciplines,while urging sport administrators to do their very best to ensure the success of sport in the country.

As we mourn our football icon,i urge our youths across sporting disciplines to strive to excel in order to put Zimbabwe on the world sporting map.In the same vein,i urge our Sports administrators to do no less so our young men and women are facilitated to self actualise in their chosen field of play,he added.
