AFZ vows to continue spearheading tree-planting programmes

Story by Peter Chivhima

THE Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) says it will continue planting trees in all its bases as part of efforts to fight climate change.

Taking the lead from President Emmerson Mnangagwa who led the National Tree Planting Day early this month, the Commander of the Airforce of Zimbabwe, Air Marshal Elson Moyo on Friday led the AFZ members in a tree planting programme at the AFZ Headquarters in Harare.

After planting the tree of the year, the Fever Acacia/ Muunga or Umkhanyakude, Air Marshal Moyo said the force will continue planting trees in all its bases to help reduce the impacts of climate change.

“Against the background, the Air Force of Zimbabwe is motivated to continue playing its part in planting trees in and around Air Headquarters and all the three Air Force Bases. In addition to planting trees at these institutions, the Air Force of Zimbabwe encourages all officers and members to take this programme to their homes and communities. Through such collective actions, it is hoped that we will be able to create a green environment and will contribute to the efforts to reverse global warming. The negative effects of global warming include extreme weather phenomena like heavy rainfall, wildfires, droughts and low temperatures.”

Zimbabwe is among the countries which attended the Conference of Parties (COP28) in Dubai in October this year, where leaders including President Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the need for action to mitigate the existential crisis of climate change.
