Former Minister convicted of criminal abuse of office

Former Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Jason Machaya and his co-accused Chaisanyerwa Chibururu have been convicted of criminal abuse of office for the unlawful allocation of residential stands in Gokwe.

Facts proven in court are that Machaya intentionally allocated state land through 17 799 stands to land developers who in turn gave him 1 791, before selling the bulk of stands.

Prosecutor, Garudzo Ziyaduma told to the court that Machaya allocated 192 commonage stands to the Apostolic Christian Church of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) when he did not have the lawful right to do so.

The duo denied the charges when their trial started last year but the state proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the former Minister committed the offence.

Machaya and Chibururu who were convicted this Monday have been remanded in custody to this Tuesday for sentencing.

The value of stolen money was put at $60 000. In the case of Chibururu, the court heard that he acted in connivance with Machaya.
