A sombre mood engulfed the nation this Tuesday after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that the Warriors will not be part of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
The nation woke up to the sad news after the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) failed to reinstate the suspended Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board.
World football governing body FIFA suspended Zimbabwe from international football over third party interference and directed the SRC to lift the suspension as a condition to get Zimbabwe back into the international football community.
CAF then gave Zimbabwe a reprieve and included them in the draw for the qualifiers, but they gave the nation until two weeks before the match day one to comply with the FIFA directive, a condition that the country has failed to meet.
“Its sad we are now watching foreign stars only, the government must intervene so that there is a solution,” said a football fan.
“We are not happy with this decision as it affects both the players and fans, we were eagerly waiting to cheer our team but now we have been let down,” said anoither
While the SRC indicated that it was prepared for the ban, local football fans have made it clear that they are not ready for such a football blackout.
