Nomadic football coach Luke Masomere has ventured into mining after leaving his coaching job at premiership outfit Manica Diamonds.

ZBC News reporter Mthokozisi Dube speaks to Masomere on his football coaching journey and his decision to go into mining.

Q. “Coach Masomere a lot of football fans are wondering about your whereabouts?”

Masomere: “Yeah I can say I am into full time mining. I am into gold mining in Mashava but I also have chrome claims here in Zvishavane.”

Q. “During this lockdown, there has been no football action, a situation which has affected both players and coaches. What’s your advice to the affected players and coaches?”

Masomere: “I would want to urge coaches and players never ever to rely solely on football. Football in this country is not paying save for a few clubs.”

Q. “Coach Masomere, you are highly regarded as one of the most travelled coaches. What were the ups and downs of your coaching career? “

Masomere : “I have coached a number of teams locally and in Botswana and what I have discovered is that football is administrated by people who are not familiar with the game hence as a coach you need to balance the pressure that comes with the job.”

Q. “Let me digress a little bit from your coaching career, as Zimbabwe we went to the Chan finals in Cameroon against a background of no football action and we posted a disastrous performance. Where do you think we lost it as a country?”

Masomere: “We were too ambitious to expect results against an absence of football. I support Loga (Warriors coach) fully but at the end of the day I ask myself whose brilliant idea was he? Does he have a coaching record which surpasses our local coaches the likes of Sunday Chidzambwa, Norman Mapeza, Callisto Pasuwa, to mention a few. Zifa is to blame for all this.”

Q. “Many people are asking when you will bounce back to coach football.”

Masomere: “It will take some time before I return to full time football but we are working on coming up with a team called Bere fc in Mashava.”

Q. “Many football fans are calling for the resumption of football action. From your own assessment, do you think it’s safe to bring back football action?”

Masomere: “ZIFA got the same grant that Zambia got from FIFA. The same grant that other nations got from FIFA. I really don’t know maybe they no longer have the money.”
