THE Zimbabwe women national hockey side, the Flames, continue to raise the country’s flag high after reaching the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Accra, Ghana.
The Flames drew one-all with neighbours Namibia in a tight contest that was dubbed a winners take all, but at the end of 70 minutes, a stalemate was enough for Zimbabwe to progress to the next round.
Although the two teams finished with the same number of points, a better goal difference saw the Flames progressing to the next round and they wait for this Thursday evening’s results to know their next opponents.
The match started off slowly with both side cautiously testing each other but it grew into a great contest as no team wanted to take the early flight home.
However, eight minutes into the second half Tinodiwanashe Elijah eventually gave Zimbabwe the lead.
Namibia pushed hard and were dully rewarded with an equaliser 20 minutes before the end of the encounter.
The draw was a good moral booster for Zimbabwe, especially after losing to the same opponents just two year ago.
The semi-finals are set for this Friday with the finals slated for Sunday.
