THE First Lady, Amai Auxilia Mnangagwa has launched a sanitary wear production project in Svosve area of Marondera Rural District as part of efforts to empower the girl child.
The move is meant to ensure that sanitary wear is accessible at affordable prices.
In that regard, The Angel of Hope Foundation on behalf of the First lady handed over 5 sewing machines and material to be used in the project which is set to be rolled out to other wards in the district.
Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Honourable Apolonia Munzverengwi thanked the First Lady saying the initiative will go a long way in empowering the Girl Child.
“As Mashonaland East, we feel honoured that the project has been launched here and we promise to do our best so that it becomes a success,” said Munzverengwi.
Ms Getrude Manyimo who represented the First Lady challenged women to ensure the project becomes a success.
“As a district that has been as the first recipients we expect you to do your best so that others will also benefit, “she said.
It was all smiles as women celebrated the launch of the project.
“Am very happy as the pioneers of the project and we promise we won’t disappoint,”
“This is a game-changer for us as rural women and the girl child,”
“The issue of sanitary pads has always been a big challenge for our children and this is going to make them accessible and affordable, “said the women.
The project is expected to produce 200 sanitary pads in the first 2 weeks and 16 000 per week thereafter.
The first lady also donated rice to the women which was handed over to the beneficiaries by Cde Munzverengwi.
