Stakeholders call upon ZIFA NC to better prepare Warriors for the upcoming COSAFA Cup

FOOTBALL stakeholders have called upon the ZIFA Normalisation Committee (NC) to prioritise the Warriors’ preparations for the upcoming COSAFA Cup slated for South Africa from the 26th of this month to the 7th of July.

The Warriors head straight into the 2024 COSAFA Cup after the just-ended 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in which they fared dismally.

The draw for the tournament was held this Friday in Johannesburg where the Warriors were drawn in Group B alongside record seven-time champions Zambia, unpredictable Comoros and a guest team yet to be named.

After the disastrous two matches against Lesotho and South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers, stakeholders have called upon the ZIFA NC to prepare the team better this time.

“We need a plan of action, I think the NC time has been characterised by indecisiveness but in the future, we need to be decisive. We need to know why we play any tournament, is it to win it, to prepare for the next one or it’s just for exposure? We already know we have AFCON qualifiers coming up in November so, let’s get into this tournament knowing that,” said a stakeholder, Brighton Ushendibaba.

Football analyst Malvern Moyo said, “We need to be forward-thinking as a country, planning is key in everything. If we are to succeed in whatever we do, we need to plan for it and success is deliberate in sport. So we need to move in that direction rather than going back and forth like we have been doing.”

Interim coach Jairos Tapera has already named his provisional squad to do duty at the tournament, with several changes from the one that played in the World Cup qualifiers.
