Sikhala, Sithole found guilty of inciting public violence

Sikhala, Sithole found guilty of inciting public violence

Story by Peter Chivhima

CITIZENS Coalition for Change senior official Job Sikhala and former Chitungwiza legislator Godfrey Sithole have been convicted for inciting public violence in 2022.

The two were found guilty after mobilising opposition supporters to go on the rampage under the pretext that they were avenging the death of Moreblessing Ali of Chitungwiza in 2022.

In convicting the two, the Magistrates noted that the videos posted by Sikhala and Sithole had overwhelming evidence that led to the orgy of violence in Nyatsime.

The magistrate also ruled that the video posed a risk of inciting violence as evidenced by what transpired in Nyatsime two days later, on the 14th of June 2022 where houses, schools and shops were destroyed.

It emerged that Sikhala and Sithole organised lorries that ferried mourners to Ali’s memorial service which was rocked by violence.

The duo will be back in court for mitigation on Monday.

Meanwhile, the court has postponed the matter in which Sikhala is accused of communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the state in 2021 to the 7th of next month.

Allegations are that Sikhala claimed that a baby strapped on its mother’s back had been beaten to death with a baton stick by police officers in Harare.

Sikhala is also facing another charge of inciting public violence.
