Series an opportunity for Chevrons to fine-tune World Cup Qualifier preps

Story by Lawrence Trusida

The Zimbabwe Select side takes on Pakistan Shaheens in the second of six one-day matches at Harare Sports Club this Friday, looking to build confidence ahead of the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.

Zimbabwe is using the six-match one-day series against Pakistan’s second-string side popularly known as the Shaheens to prepare for the World Cup Qualifiers which will be staged in Zimbabwe.

In the first one-dayer this Wednesday, Tendai Chatara, with a five-wicket haul and Wellington Masakadza, with four scalps to his name, ripped through the Pakistan Shaheens line-up to help the Zimbabwe select team to a 24-run victory at Harare Sports Club.

Even though Zimbabwe went one-nil up in the six-match series, they were out to the test by some accurate bowling by the visitors who put up a proper exhibition of swing bowling.

“The test was really good and as a team that is preparing for the World Cup Qualifiers this is really good because we are going to be facing these kinds of challenges so we need to know how to navigate them before we reach the Qualifiers,” said Zim Select captain, Wellington Masakadza.

Zimbabwe has a strong squad for the series which is their last before they host the One Day International World Cup Qualifiers in June.

Pakistan have also sent in a strong squad that has players with international experience and fringe players who want to force their way back into the first team.

The second one-dayer is on this Friday at Harare Sports Club.
